Media Evaluation of Preliminary Task

In this task I have created a front cover with similar conventions as a normal front page of a magazine. My magazine front cover includes a masthead at the top left hand side of the page and this is important because this would be where the target audience or consumers would look at first sight, I have chosen to put it at the top left side of the page because most magazine are placed on shelves where most of the time you would see the most popular magazine on top of the least popular magazines. The only part you would see clearly is the masthead at the top of the magazine which is why I felt that I needed to input that into my planning when designing the front cover. My magazine would probably be placed in the niche section because it isn’t fully developed into a popular magazine yet.
The difference that my magazine would have is the genre and the target audience that it is aimed at as mine is based on college and sixth form. The target audience that I have decided to choose are students from the actual college/sixth form and teachers/staff. I chose this target audience because it would be more relevant to them in the fact that only they would read my magazine with the exceptions of parents or younger siblings of the students, and if I include competitions they would be actively involved because only they would know what I am talking about. I think that my magazine cover is different from others because I have added images of student who go to the school and the colour scheme I have used is based on the school and all this relates to my target audience.
My magazine has a purple masthead with glowing effect which relates to youth and the school background. I’ve made sure that the magazine had an eye catching main image on the front cover, the picture is a student almost posing into the camera and this would suggest the fact that there may be a lot of fashion articles in the magazine along with textiles as that is the actual subject it is based around. The background which this student is in plays an important role in my magazine as this might suggest to the audience that most photos taken would be around the school building. I’ve added splash information as a regular convention as this changes the subject of what the images might be conveying. One of the splash information I have included is an agony aunt in the bold white fonts with a purple box background “Ask Jerry” and I have created the fonts in a welcoming and friendly way as students or teachers may want to have a connection with this character to deal with personal problems.
On my front cover I have created a midshot image of another student, this time looking directly to the camera and smiling, I have framed it in a way which looks as though he is taking a school photo as this adds more effect to my magazine genre. Another convention I have added is the barcode and the price of the magazine, this is important because the audience and consumer would want to know what the cost is and what its worth before buying, I placed the price of the magazine eighty pence which is very affordable for my target audience. Finally at the bottom of the page I included the subheadings “Music, Sports, Fashion & Trends” this basically informs the reader what is inside the magazine and I  have placed it at the bottom of the page because that is the last place where the consumer would read.
